One of my favorite Christian bands in the whole wide world is BarlowGirl. Although they retired the band in 2012, their music still lives on and rings true.
I have a few favorites—it’s hard to pick one really since so many of their songs have made a difference in my life—but “Surrender” is the one song that has always really resonated with me. Just about surrendering my life and my heart to God.
I originally bought Alicia Keys’ album, Girl on Fire, for the title track, but upon listening to the rest of the album, I realized how many other gems were included. A particular song that stands out to me is called “When It’s All Over.” Initially, I thought it was a love song from Alicia Keys to her partner. But by the end, I realize that, even though it IS a love song, it’s not for whom I think. Take a listen.
Aimee Mann has gone on to become one of the most influential lyricists and singer-songwriters in my life. Every lyric of hers always resonates with me in some way and I can find a way to identify with it (usually metaphorically and figuratively). I’ve gone on to enjoy the albums that came before and the albums that came after, but the Magnolia soundtrack holds a special place in my heart for how raw and honest the music is.
I’ve been listening to a collection of Garbage’s music on Amazon Music. They were a popular band in the 90s and I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed their music. For today, I’m dropping one of my favorites, “Supervixen.”
Continuing my string of Norah Jones songs, I also enjoy “Shoot the Moon.” It, too, is a mellow song. I’m not sure why I enjoy it. Perhaps in combination with the whole Come Away With Me album, it rounds out the tracks quite nicely. Please enjoy.
one of my favorite songs at the end of a long workday is norah jones’ “the long day is over.” it’s a beautiful song that really soothes me and allows me to just stretch out and relax. my tense shoulders soften and a lot of the stress that has built up melts away. i should make it a regular habit to listen to the song at the end of EVERY workday but it’s not always feasible. but it’s worth sharing and listening to.
